While only a handful of photographs were used on the cover and as part of the photo insert for Carny Sideshows, thousands of photographs were taken for the project. Here are a few that ended up on the cutting room floor, and even a few that actually made it into the book.

My plan is to put them up in the chronological order in which they were taken. Therefore, we’ll start with the earliest first.

Check back often, as I’ll be adding photos as the weeks (months...years...) go by. at least that’s my hope anyway.

I began work on the book with Brett, a young performer who was eager to be interviewed. He was getting ready to leave for Europe, I drove down to New York from Massachusetts and spent the better part of the day interviewing him for the book at Fantasma Magic.

After the interview Brett was kind enough to perform a bit for the camera, and, in preparing to swallow a few swords, discovered something that I later found out for myself: the disinfectant swabs sold by places like CVS are incredibly small. Disinfecting a nail before you put it in your head is one thing, but cleaning a sword with the tiny patches they sell is something else altogether.

My favorite photo being the one taken while fire eating. He’d just retained the flame in his mouth a few times, looked up at the camera and had this sort of “please tell me you got that” look on his face.

Here are some photos of Brett that didn’t make it between the covers of Carny Sideshows: Weird Wonders of the Midway.
